Life offers opportunity as it wishes, there is often no rhyme or reason as to why or when it does. Many people don’t take opportunities life presents them with for the simple fact that they are unready.

Readiness, like so many qualities, is the action of another quality. Preparation is nothing without readiness. Being ready is being prepared and taking the action, coiling the spring to be sprung when the moment is right.

There are multiple definitions of “Ready” depending on what context it is used, for my purposes the fifth one is the best.

Prepared; fitted; furnished with what is necessary, or disposed in a manner suited to the purpose; as a ship ready for sea.

– Webster’s 1828 Dictionary

Preparation is something I personally have been doing since I was a boy, reading, learning, watching. Accumulating knowledge and skill so that when the day of my opportunity arises I can size it.

I will prepare, and someday my chance will come.

– Abraham Lincoln

When you are ready the mind is poised, prepared, set for whatever happens. When you see the hand of fate moving your direction, your heart must not fail. As the blood drains you must keep courage. You have prepared for this moment and you need not be afraid of the outcome, for as Theodore Roosevelt said, “ the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.”

So, this week, I’m ready. Ready to see what the future holds, ready for my opportunity, ready for action.

Make a Plan – Perhaps a little obvious, but you need a plan to be ready. If you have a plan you don’t have to worry about wondering what to do when opportunity comes your way.

Train – Whatever your goal or opportunity you’re looking for you need to be ready physically and mentally for it. If you want to run a marathon you need to train, pushing yourself, day after day to be able to go the distance.

All things are ready, if our minds be so.

– William Shakespeare’s King Henry V

Wait – One of the hardest things in life is to wait, but after you have everything ready it’s all that’s left. You have to patiently wait for the day your opportunity arrives.
